4th og July - Independance Day, and at Pismo Beach ten thousands of people gathers to celebrate during the evening. In 2008 four Norwegians showed up. After the celebration we went to the "danish" town Solvang. For us, uses to spend our summers in Denmark, this was not very danish...
Before we left Norway someone told us Pismo Beach would be a perfect place to visit on July 4th. Fireworks, BBQ and a lot of people. We booked two nights and we chose Hilton Garden Inn San Luis Obispo-Pismo Beach - Pismo Beach, formerly known as The Mission Inn, Pismo Beach. Not very centrally located by the beach. After the celebration you will have to wait for a long time for a ride back home, or take a walk. We walked.
In 2008 they expectet around 50.000 people to Pismo Beach for the celebration. Long queues at both restaurants and bars. After waiting for some time, we got a table at Mo's Smokehouse BBQ, just 50 metres from the beach, with full control over the party.
The celebration it self was less than expected. Used to 17th of May in Norway, with parades, this was just a big family gathering with BBQ and fireworks. The fireworks was pretty nice, not spectacular, but good old fashioned fireworks.
After a day "off" at Pismo Beach, without going to the beach, the next destination was Sata Barbara. Huge wildfires in the Santa Barbara area got us to change plans. Our next stop was the little town Solvang.
This tiny little town was established by danes in 1911, and offers a lot of danish specialities, and buildings with typical danish architecture. Well, typical for old danish architecture maybe.
By all means, you can read signs on danish, look at windmils, and houses looking pretty danish. You can go to a bakery and buy "kringle" and visit shops selling other danish or Scandinavian products. You may also go to a restaurant and eat a good dansih lunch with "smørrebrød". Brown bread with the speciality "leverpostei" might have been the best lunch for the whole roadtrip.
At Olsens Bakery it´s possible to buy big boxes with small cookies. A lot of the other visitors bought a lot of them.
For dinner we went to "The Little Mermaid" at the evening. A vegtable soup for starter, and some of us had the meatballs for main. I had a "hakkebøf".
The lovely waiter was in fact danish, and talked danish to us. Even if the food was called danish, it was more american.
The slogan for Denmark in Norway is "Det er dejlig å være norsk i Danmark" og "It´s lovely to be a Norwegian in Denmark". Not the same being a Norwegian in Solvang, CA.
If you spend half a day in Solvang, you will have plenty of time.
