Zander K was opened in 2017 and for us a new hotel very centrally located just by Bergen railway station. The price was really good and the hotel is located close to the main road E39.
This was a short stay at the hotel, but we got the chance to test this facility thourougly. We had great expectations after reading reviews and several friends having good experience with the hotel.
The check in was effective and over in just a few minutes. A nice lady told us the room was upgraded to a superior double room nicely located with a view. Our expectations went even higher.
A little bit disappointing the room was just by the elevator. We hate rooms close to elevators and stairs, and should have asked about this during the check in. Inside the room we did not notice the elevator, at first.
This superior double room was not very big, but felt more spacious. This was a room for wheelchairs, so you will det a little more space than the standard rooms. A pretty good view and windows covering the whole side of the room. Not sure what makes this a superior room, but ok.
Sleeping quality
Due to a pretty late arrival and close to bed time we checked the air quality and temperature first. The air condition system was set to 22 degrees, which is too hot. The temperature inside the room was actually between 23 and 24 degrees. There was a fan at the room and we put it on for about one and a half our. It helped a bit, but the temperature was way too high when we went to bed.
This will get us to our main points in our reviews, which is about sleeping quality: The quality of the bed, lights, temperature and noise level.
Talking about the temperature, there is no doubt: It was way to high! We arrived late, and there was cloudy in Bergen. Imagine the sun shining on the big windows to the room? A sleeping temperature close to 24 degrees it at least three degrees to high.
The blinds will get your room completely dark. Close to perfect! Even with the big windows covering a side of the room from floor to the roof, the blinds were quality. Totally dark! The bed was really nice as well. Both the matress and the douvets was pure quality. The pillows might be improved, did not figure them quite out. In total the bed quality was very good.
Our last point is noise. Every hotel guests nightmare. In the evening we did not notice the elevator. The fan on the other hand, was way too noisy and we had to turn it off before we went to sleep. Even the refrigerator was making to much noise, and it did not stop. The hotel might move this to another part of the room to making in more quitet? Think so!
In the morning the elevator got very annoying. Guests leaving or going to breakfast, and the motors of the elevator made a lot of noise. A reminder: We hate rooms located by the elevator!
Breakfast
A nice shower before breakfast. The bathroom was really nice, the shower worked perfect, even a bit too hot water, so we had to decrease the temperature a bit. And then ready for one of the most important things when staying at a hotel: Breakfast!
We love hotel breakfasts and Zander K was surprisingly good at it. We booked a time for breakfast to prevent too many people at one time. The breakfast buffet was not huge, but they offered what´s expected and it tasted good! Something for everyone.
Zander K is a nice hotel, relatively new, ok and central location at a nice price. Owned by "De Bergenske" who also owns the neighbour hotel Grand Hotel Terminus. About 1000 NOK for a double room booked close to arrival is value for money. This hotel aspires for "Hotel of the Week" which we are going to publish when we are finished with this pandemic.
A few cons, noise and temperature, but all in all - value for money.
